When loading film into your camera, you’re making a choice. You’re making a commitment to a certain set of parameters within which you’ll be working. This choice will play into many other decisions you make for the duration of the roll. Will this commitment free you, confine you, or both?

I haven’t shot film in years (too broke for film)but personally I would view it as “focused freedom.” For me having too many choices can be overwhelming and distracting…like having too many lenses in the bag at a given time.

I agree completely with Valerie. Shooting film is like composing a sonnet, or a haiku. You have to adhere unfailingly to very precise rules. But these forms some have given us some of the most beautiful, resonant and timeless things ever written.
